Just a quick note to say for those who peruse my website for years on end, some checking it every half hour to an hour (yet not rereading older posts, just expecting new ones all day?), please be mindful that I am not a writing machine, and I am not a newsfeed. I have been blogging nearly every single day for over 15 years without ever putting a single post, or even a number of my essays and films, behind a paywall. These daily posts—a lot of which are long—takes a lot of energy, research, and time. Most people charge subscriptions for their blogs and Substacks. I don’t. So if you’re not going to reciprocate the work that I do by sharing these posts and/or purchasing one of my many books, then that creates a vampiric energy that I don’t want attached to me or this website. Even though I cannot control who reads this blog because it is free, and therefore open to everyone, there is such a thing as being respectful and paying it forward. There is also such a thing as Google analytics reports, which get sent to me. People act like it’s not stalking or trolling just because they’re doing it virtually and anonymously. Checking someone’s blog every 45 minutes doesn’t feel like a meaningful engagement—it feels like I’m being stalked and invisibly harassed.
